Electric Fireplace Buying Guide: Heat, Running Costs & Styles

Electric Fireplace Buying Guide: Heat, Running Costs & Styles

An electric fireplace gives you the glow of a real fire and real room heat without a chimney, a gas line or a renovation. It is one of the fastest ways to make a living room, bedroom or home office feel warmer and cozier this winter.

Does an electric fireplace give off heat?

Yes. Most electric fireplaces, including the majority of our models, have a built-in 1500W heater that puts out about 5,100 BTU. That is supplemental heat for a single room, perfect for taking the chill off without heating the whole house. You can also run the flame effect on its own with the heat off, all year round.

How much does it cost to run an electric fireplace?

A 1500W heater uses 1.5 kWh of electricity per hour on its highest setting. At average US electricity rates, that works out to roughly 20 to 30 cents per hour. With the heater off, the flame effect alone uses only a small fraction of that.

Choose your style

Freestanding fireplace stoves

Compact and portable, they move from room to room and plug into any outlet. Our 33-inch electric fireplace stove is a great fit for bedrooms, offices and small living rooms.

Freestanding fireplaces

Wider units make a stronger focal point. Compare the 43-inch freestanding electric fireplace and the 65.5-inch model for larger rooms.

Electric fireplace TV stands

One piece of furniture gives you storage, a place for your TV and a fireplace. See the 75-inch electric fireplace TV stand with shelves, and check the maximum TV size and weight on the product page.

Wall-mounted and recessed

For a sleek, built-in look, choose a model like our 60-inch smart electric fireplace with app and remote control.

How to choose the right size

  • Measure the wall or floor space, and leave room on each side so the unit looks balanced.
  • In living rooms, pick a fireplace in proportion to your sofa and TV.
  • Remember that heat output is similar across sizes, so choose size for looks, not for extra warmth.

Safety and setup

  • Plug freestanding units and TV stands directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip.
  • Keep furniture, curtains and bedding a safe distance from the heater vent, as listed in the manual.
  • Look for overheat protection and an automatic shut-off timer.
